Libertas Estates Winery
Libertas Estates Winery is a winery we just recently found out existed, and all really due to our recent visit to The Wine Collective and conversations we had with the staff there. It is located in Mt. Airy out in Frederick County and owned by Errol and Berenice Rushovich, who planted their 10 acre vineyard in 2015. They plan to officially open soon once barn renovations are complete but for now you can visit on the weekends by calling and making an appointment with farm manager, James Ewing Jr. The first thing you will notice is all of the animals. Were were immediately greeted by the 13 year old dog, Maggie, followed by the puppies, Molly and Dolly. As soon as we were seated in the barn and ready to start our tasting, 13 year old cat, Reggie was on my lap making me feel like I was part of the family. You can see both the vineyard and the meat ducks in the distance. The wines were great from the bright acidity of the pinot gris to the jammy barbera and the complexity of the cabernet franc. James was a wealth of knowledge, especially from the perspective of the vineyard and grapes themselves, which you don't often get during a tasting. It doesn't sound like they are providing grapes to The Wine Collective anymore but are partners currently with Windridge Vineyards in Darnestown. There isn't a whole lot of information out there about this winery yet so we couldn't be more excited to share this information with you. We are also excited to share that this is the 50th Maryland winery we have been to so we are well on our way to getting to them all. Between the 50 we have been to and the 20 or saw we see regularly at the festivals we attend, there aren't a whole lot left that we aren't familiar with!
