Triple Creek Winery
Triple Creek Winery is located on the Eastern Shore and run by four brothers, Taylor, Paul, Alex and Corey Spies. Formerly a cucumber farm, this is a property that has been around for a very long time but the tasting room officially opened in 2015. En route to our annual camping trip, we were passing through on a Friday and the winery was, luckily, available for a tasting appointment outside of their regular hours to accommodate us. We were greeted by Margo (aka Nana) who couldn't have been a better host. She was a wealth of knowledge about how they care for each type of grape in the vineyard and each individual wine she poured us in our flights. They currently have a bright, new 2020 pinot gris in their white flight and some oaked chardonnays that have aged well since 2015. They still have some nice balanced acidity with the oak and vanilla flavors. But the reds were pretty special. They each had at least 7 years of age on them and were showing some tertiary flavors that were a real treat. The Devil's Reach is a cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot blend full of pepper, blackberry and vanilla flavor. The Chesapeake 2016 is a cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot blend with aromas of tennis ball, tart raspberry and cinnamon, complete with a lingering finish. Chambourcin 2016 boasted a coffee, cocoa finish. We started in the rustic, cozy barn, chatting with Margo as she prepared our flights, then enjoyed the gorgeous weather out on their patio enjoying views of green trees and the grape vines while sipping and enjoying our wines. We were then bummed to hear on the way out as we were buying our bottles that they may be selling the winery. Their big balloon festival they have every year has been rained out 4 out of the last 5 years. One of the son's, Alex, is moving on. This may be the last year or so that you can visit the Spies and taste these great wines so get there while you can!
